Last week we hosted our first public event, Twine Workshop with Tom Cruz. Thanks to Tom’s creativity and skills, it was an amazing success. We learned what Twine is, what can be achieved using it and how by ourselves. On that last note, Gamification Global announced a Twine competition. We gave all attendees a week to prepare their own interactive stories using this fantastic tool.

Who is Marloes and how she won our Twine competition

The winning submission was sent by Marloes Berkers. Marloes help organisations to reach their employees’ full potential by developing educational games. She is a founder of Thrivelop, where leveraging her background in education and passion for games, she is making learning fun and impactful.

For this competition, Marloes created an interactive story where we become an investigator hired to solve a mystery of missing Christmas gifts.

Tom's opinion

Marloes’ Christmas mystery had me feeling like Benoit Blanc in a holiday-themed Knives Out (with much jollier stakes). The clever use of links to search rooms, leave, and later return to them create the feeling of navigating a physical space. Solving the mystery was satisfying, while clever and funny writing elevated the whole experience.

One of the biggest fears of Christmas was realised in an interactive story. Fortunately, thanks to our investigative skills we have a chance to save the day. I really like this experience, because it pushed me to check every corner and exhaust all possibilities before giving my judgement. Technically, I couldn’t fault it and I appreciate how Marloes put all of Tom’s advise in practice. Compelling story, rich characters, various linked locations and helping player to solve the puzzle. Great job.

I really liked the experience and was invested to discover who is guilty. The game managed to trick me into thinking that…maybe I won’t spoil the fun for you. It wasn’t hard to find the thief in the final showdown, but it was really satisfying. The setting, storytelling and christmassy theme were fantastic.

Sitting in London, before the fireplace with Christmas lights twinkling. We just finished the Christmas mystery Marloes put together after the inspirational workshop with Tom. We had great fun going through the story! Very engaging! We really enjoyed the positive vibe of the game! Can’t wait for the next one!

I was very impressed with the speed with which such an elaborate storyline with alternative connections was delivered! The characters were engaging, the story hooked me up till the resolution and the simplicity of text based games still works just fine if you have a compelling story. Truly excellent storytelling skills, Marloes! Bravo!
